Details

Preferred for peak climbing by both hardcore as well as moderate and novice climbers, Mera Peak is the tallest trekking peak in Nepal. Located in the Hinku Valley of the Sagarmatha region of Nepal, the highest point of this trekking peak is 6,476m (21,247 ft). Mera Peak gives you a unique fusion experience of trekking and peak climbing.

Your attempt to scale this beautiful peak starts from Lukla from where you will head towards its base camp via Zatar La Pass (4,610m/15,124ft). The base camp of Mera Peak is situated at an altitude of 4,800m (15,700ft). On the way, you walk through culturally rich Sherpa villages. Because of the high altitude you have to ascend during the trip, you have to have proper acclimatization prior to attempting to scale this peak.

Though acclivity of Mera Peak does not throw you the most extreme challenges like some of the more demanding Himalayan peaks do, it won’t leave you disappointed. The altitude and ascent of Mera Peak presents you the challenge professional peak climbers overtake while scaling more challenging peaks.  What adds to the excitement is the view you get to behold once at the summit. Once at the top, you will be welcomed by an exquisite view of endless chain of majestic peaks including Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu and Baruntse, something worth every of the hardness you undertake.

The base camp of the Mera Peak is at an altitude of 5,300m on the Hongu sector while the high camp is at an altitude of 5,800m on a rocky projection. Prior peak climbing experience is not a necessary prerequisite for one to be able to climb Mera Peak. However, as you ascend as high as 6461m, the trip presents enough challenge. Altitude sickness can be an issue. Plus, as you ascend even smaller acclivities seem to take infinity for you to ascend, the challenges of standard peak climbing will all be there. You will learn the required skills as you travel ahead.

Trip Highlights
  • Summit of highest trekking peak of Nepal Mera Peak (6,476m)
  • Opportunity to gain proficiency in basic Mountaineering Skills: using ice axe and crampon
  • Mera Peak, a viewpoint for five of the world's 8,000-meter mountains: Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Makalu, and Kanchanjunga.

Landmarks and Monuments along the Route

Mera Peak’s journey is not just about scaling its majestic heights; it’s also a captivating odyssey through a region brimming with cultural and historical landmarks. As you traverse the Khumbu region, you’ll encounter the sacred monasteries of Tengboche and Pangboche, where the air resonates with ancient mantras. The charming Sherpa villages, such as Namche Bazaar, serve as living monuments to centuries of resilient mountain living. Along the way, pay your respects to the yak caravans, lifelines of these high-altitude communities. These landmarks are more than mere sights; they are living chapters of Himalayan history and spirituality.

Passport & Visa Requirements

To embark on your Mera Peak adventure, your passport is your ticket to Nepal’s enchanting landscapes. Ensure your passport has a minimum of six months’ validity from your planned departure date.

Upon arrival at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, acquiring a visa is a straightforward process. Multiple entry visa options are available, from 15 days to 90 days, with fees varying accordingly. It’s vital to have a few passport-sized photos and U.S. dollars (or the equivalent in other major currencies) on hand for your visa application.

Permits and Regulations

The journey to Mera Peak is orchestrated by nature’s majesty, but it’s also subject to Nepal’s regulatory orchestration. Trekkers and climbers must secure a Sagarmatha National Park entry permit and a Mera Peak climbing permit. These permits are attainable in Kathmandu through the Nepal Tourism Board. It’s important to familiarize yourself with park regulations, including waste disposal and wildlife protection, ensuring a harmonious coexistence with the pristine environment.

Food

Mera Peak’s culinary experience is a delightful revelation. Teahouses along the trail offer an array of nourishing dishes that transcend the challenges of high-altitude cooking. Savor the simplicity of dal bhat, Nepal’s national dish, or sample a bowl of hearty Sherpa stew. For the adventurous, taste the warmth of yak milk tea or enjoy freshly baked Tibetan bread. While menus may be limited in remote teahouses, the journey’s culinary diversity will leave you satisfied and eager for each meal.

Drinking Water

In the realm of high altitudes, safe drinking water is your elixir of life. With water sources originating from pristine glaciers, the water appears tempting, yet it’s imperative to treat it before consumption. Carry water purification tablets, a filter, or opt for boiled water from teahouses to protect against waterborne illnesses. Staying hydrated is a key component of your journey’s success.

Health and Safety Concerns

Before embarking on your Mera Peak venture, prioritize your health and safety with a pre-trek medical check-up. Consult your healthcare provider for vaccinations and medications tailored to your travel. Be equipped with a basic first-aid kit and stay vigilant about high-altitude hazards, such as frostbite and snow blindness. Remember, prevention is the best medicine in the mountains.

Pre-Trek Check-up

Before you set foot on the high-altitude trails, a pre-trek medical check-up is a crucial step in ensuring a safe and enjoyable journey. This medical evaluation should encompass a comprehensive physical examination and a discussion with your healthcare provider about your travel plans. Your provider will offer recommendations for vaccinations, as well as prescribe medications to prevent altitude-related illnesses. This check-up not only safeguards your well-being but also provides peace of mind as you embark on the adventure of a lifetime.

Physical Fitness

Physical fitness is the cornerstone of a successful Mera Peak expedition. This epic journey demands endurance, strength, and cardiovascular fitness. To prepare your body for the rigors of high-altitude trekking and climbing, engage in a well-rounded fitness routine. Focus on aerobic exercises like hiking and jogging, strength training to build muscle power, and flexibility exercises to ensure agility. Training your body is not just a physical endeavor but a mental one, building the mental fortitude necessary for summiting this Himalayan giant.

Altitude Sickness

Altitude Sickness, often referred to as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), is an ever-present concern during high-altitude treks like Mera Peak. It is crucial to understand its signs and symptoms, which may include headaches, nausea, and fatigue. The key to mitigating AMS is gradual acclimatization to higher altitudes. Listen to your body and your trek leader, as descending to lower altitudes when symptoms appear is a critical step to recovery.

AMS DO’s:

  • Acclimatize Gradually: Ascend slowly and include acclimatization days in your itinerary.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to combat dehydration and reduce the risk of AMS.
  • Rest and Relax: Use rest days to recharge, allowing your body to acclimatize.
  • Descend if Necessary: If symptoms worsen, descend to lower altitudes immediately.

AMS DON’Ts:

  • Don’t Rush: Avoid rapid ascents; haste can lead to severe AMS.
  • Don’t Overexert: Engage in moderate physical activity and conserve energy.
  • Don’t Ignore Symptoms: Take any signs of AMS seriously and inform your trek leader.
  • Don’t Self-Medicate: Consult a healthcare professional for proper treatment.

Local Culture and Lifestyle

As you journey through the Khumbu region, immerse yourself in the rich Sherpa culture and lifestyle. The region is dotted with monasteries, prayer flags, and chortens, which reflect the deep-rooted Buddhist traditions. Show respect by circumambulating these religious structures clockwise and asking for permission before taking photographs inside monasteries. Engage with the locals, learn about their customs and festivals, and gain a deeper appreciation of their way of life. Treating the Sherpa communities with respect and humility enriches your cultural experience.

Electricity and Internet

In the high Himalayas, electricity is a precious commodity. Teahouses and lodges may offer limited charging facilities, so consider carrying portable chargers or solar panels. While some teahouses provide Wi-Fi, expect slow and intermittent connections. Embrace this opportunity to disconnect from the digital world and immerse yourself in the natural wonders of the Everest region.

Additional/Special Gear

In the high altitudes, the right gear is your closest ally. Beyond the basics, consider special gear for varying weather conditions. Insulated gloves, thermal layers, and a warm sleeping bag are crucial for frigid nights. Crampons, ice axes, and harnesses come into play during the glacier crossing. A four-season tent offers added protection against extreme weather. Consult your expedition team for specific gear recommendations based on your itinerary.

Rescue/Evacuation Situation

Safety always comes first in the mountains. In the event of an emergency or illness, you’ll be relieved to know that comprehensive rescue and evacuation services are available in the Everest region. It’s prudent to carry travel insurance that includes coverage for high-altitude rescue. Familiarize yourself with evacuation procedures and contact information for local rescue services. Your trek leader and team will be well-versed in handling emergencies, ensuring your safety.

Transportation

The journey to Mera Peak starts with hassle-free transportation arranged by your tour operator. A private car, driven by a professional, is your comfortable shuttle to the trek’s starting point. You’ll be greeted with a warm welcome in Kathmandu before embarking on the trek. The convenient transportation ensures a seamless transition from bustling city life to the serene Himalayan wilderness, setting the tone for your expedition.

Climate and Best Time to Visit

The climate in the Everest region is as dynamic as the landscapes it embraces. Understanding the seasonal variations is essential for planning a successful trek. Spring (April to May) and autumn (October to November) are the most popular times for Mera Peak climbing due to stable weather conditions. Winter treks offer pristine, snow-covered landscapes, but colder temperatures. The monsoon season (June to September) is less favorable due to heavy rainfall and poor visibility. Choose your expedition’s timing wisely to ensure an unforgettable journey.

Excellent all round Completed the three peaks pass with access Nepal. Hiked for 15 days straight. Found a couple of day’s challenging. The challenge made the adventure even more special. Found access Nepal to be a great company. Everything was organised and constant communication between their office and our designated go between. Our guide Subodh was fantastic. Provided plenty information on cultural landmarks along the walk and of Nepal itself. He encouraged us to go at our own pace and was flexible with the path to make some days easier and catch up on other days. We had 3 sherpas Netra, yubaraj and Dipesh. These guys are beasts and well deserve a generous tip. All in all the trip was fantastic and the price for the trip was on the low side compared to other tour companies and they are a local company that rely on word of mouth. Would book them in again when going back to Nepal. David (Australia)

Guaranteed support and unique experience with Access I did the Three Passes Trekking with Access and I can assure you that it was the best experience of my life. Sadhana gave me all the support a few weeks before the trip, organized the itinerary, a guide gave me all the tips before the trip, clothes, health, itinerary, tips and everything else. In addition to everything, Lakpa was my guide, I don't know what would have become of me without him, he recognized the moments when I was very tired, he arranged all my organization for a peaceful stay in the lodges and he gave me a lot of support. Anyway, I recommend Access with my eyes closed, I want and will go back to Nepal in the near future and do other trekkings. It was my life's dream come true!

Fantastic company that will give you the experience of a lifetime! This is our second time going with Access Nepal, this time for our honeymoon, and it was just as fantastic the second time around. It's an absolutely lovely company that will handle your trip as professionally as possible, from arriving at the airport to leaving again. They listen to your needs and wishes, and customize the trip accordingly. We are always incredibly well taken care of by one of the managers, Sadhana, who is a dear friend by now, who always does anything she can to make the trip the absolute best it can be. And we couldn't have asked for better company or a more trustworthy guide than our guide Giri. The company has very high standards as to how they treat and compensate their staff, and its really visible in the content and pride shown by all of their staff members. As for the treks they offer, we've done both the Everest three high passes and the Manaslu circuit now, and both have been absolutely mind-blowing. There really is no other place in the world like the Himalayas. Every single part; the Jeep ride into the areas, the high roads, the mountain sides, the mountains following your every step; everything is just absolutely amazing. It's too amazing to describe in words or pictures. I can't tell you anything but to GO!!! It's well, well, well worth the time and cost!!

3 passes with Accsess Nepal I had one of the best experiences of my life with Accsess Nepal, in the mountains of Nepal. To go to the Everest Base Camp is a dream of many. However, I wanted a little bit more, so I chose the "Everest 3 High Passes - 19 days" trek. Incredible. The sights and people of this wonderful place will remain etched in my memory forever. The company provided all the administrative support for my arrival in Kathmandu, through Sadhana. She was always very prompt with my various questions and ensured a perfect organization for my comfort and safety. And, finally, Devman. He was our guide during the trek. A first-rate professional. Very concerned about the safety of the group. Knowledgeable about the mountain and the fantastic Nepalese culture. He ensured that everyone individually enjoyed the best possible experience on this spectacular trek. I really recomend this company and if you can, choose Devman as your guide. Enjoy the mountain!

It was worth waiting so many years I did the Everest Base Camping trek with this agency and it was much better than I expected. I made the trip alone and received all the support from Sadhana and had the most partner guide along with the porter. I felt safe and respected the entire time. We form a family and enjoy every day with great joy. This trip will stay forever in my memory and heart. Very grateful to the entire Access Nepal family, especially my guide Sobodh for all his care and teachings.

Grand tour of Nepal Our whole trip to Nepal was excellent from the tailor made itinerary organized by Pratap to the internal transfers by car. The whole trip was professionally organized after several discussions until it was exactly as we wanted and the tour company did not fail us. Our guide Bimal was very protective and very knowledgeable and the driver Laxman was safe and very experienced. I would definitely recommend this company to friends and family as we got the exact trip that we wanted and expected. The hotels selected were fantastic throughout. If we were to do this trip again we would fly internally rather than drive as the roads were not that great. Thankyou Pratap for a memorable trip. Girish and Leena Bhome (UK)

The entire planning went smoothly and our trip went very smoothly. From the moment we landed in the airport, the guide engaged by the agency was able to link up with us and from there on made sure our trip was as comfortable as possible, providing excellent advice.
My friend and I booked a 25 day package with the agency and they were able to customize the trip to our requirements and also providing extremely good pricing! Had 2 guides and both were extremely experienced and dedicated.
Guide 1 – Pemba Sherpa (For mera peak)
Guide 2 – Giri (for Everest base camp & kala patthar)
On our rest day in Kathmandu, the agency was able to engage one of their city tour guides immediately when we decided to do an impromtu sight seeing.
Will definitely reccomend this agency for anyone travelling to nepal
