Landmarks and Monuments Along the Way

During your Island Peak climbing adventure, you’ll have the opportunity to explore some remarkable landmarks and cultural sites. One such location is the Tengboche Monastery, a Tibetan Buddhist monastery known for its stunning architecture and breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. The Pangboche Monastery, another significant stop on your journey, houses a “Yeti scalp” relic. Additionally, as you make your way to Chhukung, you’ll be surrounded by awe-inspiring views of Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and other majestic peaks. These landmarks not only add cultural depth to your experience but also provide opportunities for reflection and admiration.

Passport & Visa Requirements

For international travelers, a valid passport is a fundamental requirement for entering Nepal. Depending on your nationality, you may be eligible for a tourist visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. The duration and cost of the visa vary, so it’s advisable to check the latest requirements with the Nepalese Embassy or Consulate in your home country before your trip. Ensure your passport has at least six months’ validity from the date of your planned departure from Nepal.

Permits and Regulations

Island Peak climbing requires several permits that you must obtain before embarking on this adventure. These permits help manage the trekking and mountaineering activities in the region and contribute to the conservation and maintenance of the area. Here’s a breakdown of the permits and their costs:

Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) Permit: The Nepal Mountaineering Association issues a specific Island Peak climbing permit. The permit fee is dependent on the season in which you plan to undertake the climb.

  • Spring Season (March to May): Spring is the most favorable time for Island Peak climbing due to stable weather conditions and clear skies. The cost of the climbing permit in Spring is USD 250. This season attracts a significant number of climbers, offering a shared climbing experience.

  • Autumn Season (September to November): Autumn is another ideal season for climbing Island Peak, providing stable weather and excellent mountain views. The cost of the climbing permit in Autumn is USD 125.

  • Off-Seasons (Summer and Winter): Summer and winter are considered off-seasons for climbing in Nepal. As a result, the cost of the NMA Island Peak climbing permit is lower during these periods, at USD 70.

Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit: You’ll need a Sagarmatha National Park entry permit to access the park, which includes the Island Peak region. The fee for this permit varies for SAARC and foreign nationals.

  • For SAARC Nationals: The permit fee is Nrs. 1500, which is approximately US$ 15.

  • For Foreign Nationals: The permit fee is Nrs. 3000, which is approximately US$ 30.

Additionally, there’s a Garbage Deposit fee of US$ 500 applicable to all 27 NMA peaks, including Island Peak. This fee is refundable upon the proper disposal of garbage after the expedition.

Local Area Permit: Local area permits are necessary as you enter various municipalities during your Island Peak climb. If you’re traveling with a trekking agency, they will typically arrange this permit for you.

  • Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit: In particular, you’ll require a local area permit for the Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality. The cost of this permit is around NRs. 2000, which is approximately USD 20. You can obtain this permit in Lukla upon your arrival.

These permits are essential for ensuring a safe and regulated climbing experience in the Island Peak region, and they contribute to the preservation of the natural beauty and cultural heritage of the area. Make sure to obtain them as part of your pre-climbing preparations to avoid any hassles during your journey.

Food

While trekking to Island Peak, you’ll enjoy a mix of local and international cuisine at teahouses and lodges along the way. Traditional Nepali dishes like dal bhat (lentil soup with rice) and momo (dumplings) are readily available. For those with dietary restrictions or preferences, some teahouses can accommodate special requests. However, it’s wise to carry some of your favorite snacks and energy bars for added variety.

Drinking Water

To stay hydrated during your trek, there are several options for drinking water. You can purify tap water using water purification tablets or a water filter. Alternatively, bottled water is available, but it can be expensive and environmentally unfriendly. Using a reusable water bottle and treating water from taps or natural sources is a more sustainable choice.

Health and Safety Concerns

The trek to Island Peak involves significant physical exertion and exposure to high altitudes. Adequate fitness preparation is crucial, as is a visit to your healthcare provider for a thorough pre-trek check-up. Ensure your vaccinations are up-to-date, and discuss altitude sickness prevention and other travel health precautions.

Pre-Trek Check-Up: Before embarking on your Island Peak climbing journey, it’s essential to undergo a comprehensive medical check-up. Discuss your travel plans and medical history with your healthcare provider. They can offer guidance on vaccinations, medications, and general health tips for high-altitude trekking.

Physical Fitness: Physical fitness is a key component of a successful Island Peak climb. Incorporate a regular fitness routine that includes cardiovascular, strength, and endurance training. Focus on exercises that strengthen your legs, core, and cardiovascular system to prepare for the challenging terrain and altitude.

Altitude Sickness

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a common concern during high-altitude treks. Symptoms may include headaches, nausea, and dizziness. To prevent AMS, ascend gradually, stay hydrated, and take adequate rest days for acclimatization. If symptoms persist or worsen, it’s essential to descend to lower altitudes.

AMS DO’s:

  • Ascend slowly, following a proper acclimatization schedule.
  • Stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.
  • Listen to your body and fellow trekkers for signs of AMS.

AMS DON’Ts:

  • Don’t ascend too quickly without proper acclimatization.
  • Avoid excessive physical exertion at high altitudes.
  • Don’t ignore symptoms of AMS. Seek immediate medical attention if they worsen.

Local Culture and Lifestyle

Immersing yourself in the local culture and lifestyle is an integral part of the Island Peak experience. Respect local customs, such as removing your shoes when entering homes or monasteries. Engage with the Sherpa communities along the way, learning about their traditions and way of life. Supporting local businesses, such as teahouses and shops, contributes to the sustainable development of the region.

Electricity and Internet

While trekking, electricity and internet connectivity can be limited. Teahouses may offer charging facilities for a fee, so bring a portable power bank to keep your devices charged. Internet access may be available in some places, but it can be slow and unreliable.

Additional/Special Gear

In addition to standard trekking gear, Island Peak climbing requires specialized equipment like crampons, ice axes, harnesses, helmets, and ropes. Consider renting or purchasing these items in Kathmandu. Be sure to invest in high-quality, well-fitting gear to ensure your safety and comfort during the climb.

Rescue/Evacuation Situation

It’s crucial to be aware of the emergency rescue and evacuation options. Acquire comprehensive travel and rescue insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and medical emergencies. Keep important contact information for local rescue services and your embassy on hand in case of emergencies.

Transportation

Access to Island Peak typically begins with a flight to Lukla from Kathmandu. From Lukla, the trek begins. Transportation is generally arranged as part of package services, with private cars and professional drivers facilitating transfers.

Climate and Best Time to Visit

The best time to attempt Island Peak climbing is during the pre-monsoon (spring) and post-monsoon (autumn) seasons. These periods, from late March to early June and late September to early November, respectively, offer stable weather conditions and clear skies, making them ideal for mountaineering. Winter and monsoon seasons are less favorable due to harsh weather and increased avalanche risk.

Excellent all round Completed the three peaks pass with access Nepal. Hiked for 15 days straight. Found a couple of day’s challenging. The challenge made the adventure even more special. Found access Nepal to be a great company. Everything was organised and constant communication between their office and our designated go between. Our guide Subodh was fantastic. Provided plenty information on cultural landmarks along the walk and of Nepal itself. He encouraged us to go at our own pace and was flexible with the path to make some days easier and catch up on other days. We had 3 sherpas Netra, yubaraj and Dipesh. These guys are beasts and well deserve a generous tip. All in all the trip was fantastic and the price for the trip was on the low side compared to other tour companies and they are a local company that rely on word of mouth. Would book them in again when going back to Nepal. David (Australia)

Guaranteed support and unique experience with Access I did the Three Passes Trekking with Access and I can assure you that it was the best experience of my life. Sadhana gave me all the support a few weeks before the trip, organized the itinerary, a guide gave me all the tips before the trip, clothes, health, itinerary, tips and everything else. In addition to everything, Lakpa was my guide, I don't know what would have become of me without him, he recognized the moments when I was very tired, he arranged all my organization for a peaceful stay in the lodges and he gave me a lot of support. Anyway, I recommend Access with my eyes closed, I want and will go back to Nepal in the near future and do other trekkings. It was my life's dream come true!

Fantastic company that will give you the experience of a lifetime! This is our second time going with Access Nepal, this time for our honeymoon, and it was just as fantastic the second time around. It's an absolutely lovely company that will handle your trip as professionally as possible, from arriving at the airport to leaving again. They listen to your needs and wishes, and customize the trip accordingly. We are always incredibly well taken care of by one of the managers, Sadhana, who is a dear friend by now, who always does anything she can to make the trip the absolute best it can be. And we couldn't have asked for better company or a more trustworthy guide than our guide Giri. The company has very high standards as to how they treat and compensate their staff, and its really visible in the content and pride shown by all of their staff members. As for the treks they offer, we've done both the Everest three high passes and the Manaslu circuit now, and both have been absolutely mind-blowing. There really is no other place in the world like the Himalayas. Every single part; the Jeep ride into the areas, the high roads, the mountain sides, the mountains following your every step; everything is just absolutely amazing. It's too amazing to describe in words or pictures. I can't tell you anything but to GO!!! It's well, well, well worth the time and cost!!

3 passes with Accsess Nepal I had one of the best experiences of my life with Accsess Nepal, in the mountains of Nepal. To go to the Everest Base Camp is a dream of many. However, I wanted a little bit more, so I chose the "Everest 3 High Passes - 19 days" trek. Incredible. The sights and people of this wonderful place will remain etched in my memory forever. The company provided all the administrative support for my arrival in Kathmandu, through Sadhana. She was always very prompt with my various questions and ensured a perfect organization for my comfort and safety. And, finally, Devman. He was our guide during the trek. A first-rate professional. Very concerned about the safety of the group. Knowledgeable about the mountain and the fantastic Nepalese culture. He ensured that everyone individually enjoyed the best possible experience on this spectacular trek. I really recomend this company and if you can, choose Devman as your guide. Enjoy the mountain!

It was worth waiting so many years I did the Everest Base Camping trek with this agency and it was much better than I expected. I made the trip alone and received all the support from Sadhana and had the most partner guide along with the porter. I felt safe and respected the entire time. We form a family and enjoy every day with great joy. This trip will stay forever in my memory and heart. Grand tour of Nepal Our whole trip to Nepal was excellent from the tailor made itinerary organized by Pratap to the internal transfers by car. The whole trip was professionally organized after several discussions until it was exactly as we wanted and the tour company did not fail us. Our guide Bimal was very protective and very knowledgeable and the driver Laxman was safe and very experienced. I would definitely recommend this company to friends and family as we got the exact trip that we wanted and expected. The hotels selected were fantastic throughout. If we were to do this trip again we would fly internally rather than drive as the roads were not that great. Thankyou Pratap for a memorable trip. Girish and Leena Bhome (UK)

Island Peak Climb
Sep 2019
I had the pleasure of trekking with Access Nepal to Mt. Everest Base Camp in Sept. 2017 and was very pleased. When I decided to Climb Island Peak in 2019 I naturally went back to Access Nepal. From the planning stages to my orientation meeting in Kathmandu, my trek coordinator, Sadhana, was always available to answer my questions. She was very helpful and prompt always getting back to me with answers the next day. She even helped me customize the trip by shortening the itinerary and adding a day of rock climbing. When bad whether resulted in cancelled flights to Lukla, Sadhana and my guide worked hard to find alternative arrangements eventually securing a reasonably priced helicopter ride to keep us on schedule.

My trek and climb was expertly guided by my Sherpa, Pimba. I felt confident knowing that Pimba led several successful summits of Everest. In addition to arranging travel and keeping us on schedule he kept a watchful eye on us with primary concern for our health, safety and comfort. He provided the essential information and training I would need for the climb, and provided advice on proper clothing & gear rental. On the day of the climb we were joined by an additional Sherpa so both my fellow climber and I had our own personal Sherpa. The climb was very strenuous at the higher elevations and having a personal Sherpa was extremely helpful.
Climbing Island peak was the experience and physical challenge of a lifetime and I’m glad I did it with Access Nepal.

Everest Base Camp Trek & Island Peak
May 2018
Recently back from successfully summiting Island Peak in Nepal with Access Nepal. We highly recommend this trek. It’s not the easiest but with a good level of fitness it’s a great adventure. The trip includes a trek to Everest Base Camp and a great climb with ropes and crampons on Island Peak itself. Our trekking guide Prakash picked us up at arrival at Kathmandu airport and Sandhana (travel adviser) ran us through the trip logistics before we set off the following day. With very helpful guides (trekking & climbing) and a porter supporting us throughout our trek, everything fell into place and all we had to do was concentrate on enjoying our trip. It was great to walk through the Everest region and summiting Island Peak was definitely the highlight. We can’t thank our Access Nepal enough for helping us have a successful trip and ensuring all the logistics fell into place, even when the weather caused problems getting into and out of Lukla airport. The trek’s schedule is well structured to minimise any difficulties with altitude and everyday our guide couldn’t do enough to ensure we enjoyed our trek, were well accommodated and weren’t suffering issues with altitude. If you’re thinking of trekking in Nepal we strongly recommend going with Access Nepal.
